“Island Form:  Ode to the Grasslands”

“Island Form:  Earth’s Reformation”

LATER IN THE EIGHTIES,

building with porcelain

slabs joins the process

to express Earth’s

abundance.   The layers

represent years of

reconstruction as seen in geological structures.

Weather and the earth’s interior shifts perform

the continuous changes of observed surfaces.

The foundation of tripod and trifold

layers continues to unify as minds

and souls rebuild.

These “Island Forms” rekindle my

identity with the Hawaiian

Islands, my birthplace.

“Tripod Arc with Light, Middle, and Dark Tone Clays”, bound with colored cotton filament, views 1 & 2

CONTINUING WITH THE WHEEL THROWN AND ALTERED SHAPES DURING THE EARLY EIGHTIES,

multiple shapes of varied colored stoneware and porcelain combine to form ideas of unity and

regeneration.   The varied tones of the clay forms reciprocate with one another.

“STONEWARE AND PORCELAIN WITH FEATHERS” from the late ‘70’s.

Clay, a dense material, is contrasted by an opposite, the lightness of feathers.  As two of nature’s finely tuned materials, the feeling expressed resembles an intimate concert of change toward the infinite.

The “hands-on” process involves air enclosed shapes made on the potters wheel, then altered to form the base, or “bottom” of the hollow container.

The lids are symbolic of the sun or the moon, the integration of female and  male elements.

Feathers have an everlasting quality, these having retained their shape for over 30 years.
